Moree was founded by Dejan and Clare, two design engineers who met at Imperial and the Royal College of Art and teamed up over a shared drive to build a genuinely circular food system. They started collaborating on design projects and academic work, including supporting students to integrate sustainability into their projects, before establishing circular innovation consultancy Department 22. 

Through their work with food companies including McDonald’s, Sainsbury’s, M&S and Coca-Cola, they identified a recurring challenge: although reusable packaging was the most sustainable packaging option, there were few practical, off-the-shelf solutions available. This led to the creation of Moree, initially exploring the wider food system before focusing on dry foods and, ultimately, coffee. 

Today, Moree develops reusable packaging, tracking software, and supporting services for coffee roasteries and consumers. Imperial has supported its development through the Enterprise Lab’s IVMS and GTLC programmes, the Chemistry Department’s work on its first life-cycle assessment, and the Greenhouse accelerator, now known as Undaunted.
